We have an excellent line-up of speakers and topics for the annual pre-judging workshop in Syracuse sponsored by the Society for News Design Foundation. Jonathon Berlin of the Chicago Tribune, Richard Johnson of the National Post and Adonis Durado of the Times of Oman and and Al Shabiba will all present. We’ll also have critiques of student work and an awesome door prize: one free professional registration to the SND annual workshop in Cleveland, Ohio Oct. 11-13.

• In Boston, the [email protected] Meetup will be on Friday night (Sept. 23) at the Back Bay Social Club from 5-8. If you went last year in D.C., you know this is a great gathering with lots of fun networking and socializing.
• In St. Louis, the SND Foundation’s Trivia Night fundraiser on Friday night (Sept. 30) will offer a local and fun way to interact with your design brothers and sisters while showing off your ninja-like knowledge.

Ten students from six universities were selected to receive free student registration and $500 toward travel and hotel expenses.
Many people started out the night insisting that they would not sing. By the time things wrapped up, most of them had succumbed to the coaxing of the crowd. As the last seconds of the Super Bowl ticked away, SND Karaoke Night kicked off to raise money for the SND Foundation. We collected $2,344 in donations with about $1,700 more in pledges.
Each year, people line up out the doors to outbid each other on a host of donated items at the SND Foundation’s silent auction. Freelance illustrations, books of inspiration, original prints, a little bit of rock and roll and a lot of Chilean alpacas.
A panel of seven SND leaders selected Wei for the $2,000 award based on her thoughtful answers to two essay questions, the quality of her portfolio, her professor’s recommendation and her strong grade point average.
