The Society for News Design is pleased to announce that Tiffany Shackelford has become Executive Director of the organization, effective today. After a thorough and months-long search, led by SND’s executive committee, Tiffany will assume a full-time leadership role to help the Society grow and navigate the organization’s future.

Tiffany has worked within and adjacent to media and journalism organizations throughout her career, including the Pew Research Center, the Association of Capitol Reporters and Editors, and served as the Executive Director of the Association of Alternative Newsmedia for more than five years. Most recently, she served as Chief Strategy Officer of the National Governors Association, one of the most respected public policy organizations in the country. In her free time, she co-founded ONA’s first local chapter, in Washington, D.C., which now boasts more than 1,000 members.

“The Society is lucky to have someone of Tiffany’s caliber, experience and demeanor to help steer us into the next era,” said Steve Dorsey, SND executive committee board member and a vice president at GateHouse Media. “She comes with vast media experience, a deep contact list, and proven ability to make proactive, innovative change happen across dynamic organizations.”

As executive director, Tiffany has chief responsibility for SND’s programs, initiatives, finances and partnerships, and works at the direction of the board. The Society, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary, champions visual journalism across the globe.

“Now, more than ever, clear informative news design is essential to communicate complex concepts in both local communities and the global arena,” Tiffany said. “I’m honored to support the individuals and organizations that do this important work. I am excited about what’s to come for SND.”

Tiffany succeeds Stephen Komives, who held the role for a decade and managed to steady SND through immense change and turbulence across the industry.

“I was most struck by Tiffany’s enthusiasm for our mission coupled with her drive and vision for what SND could be,” said Tyson Evans, who lead the search committee as the Society’s immediate past-president, and is a director for strategy at The New York Times.

As President, I’m excited to welcome Tiffany and eager to work alongside her and in coordination with the Board of Directors. And I want to thank the executive committee and search committee for their work during this transition. The members of those committees include, respectively, Aly Morris, Steve Dorsey, Cristóbal Edwards, Tyson Evans, Gustavo Lo Valvo, and Ryan Sparrow; and, on the search committee, Greg Manifold, Rebekah Monson, and Sara Quinn.

I encourage everyone to reach out and welcome Tiffany (tiffany@snd.org). Don’t hesitate to share your ideas, frustrations or questions directly with her or me or other board members.
