Lucio Villa started “Straight out of Compton.”
Growing up in Compton, Calif., Villa taught himself code in middle school and developed his passion for photography in high school, where he served as the yearbook’s photo editor.
Villa said he found internships to apply for by setting up Google alerts for keywords surrounding internships. He landed at the Chicago Reporter in 2012 as a photography intern, and stayed on afterwards as a Fellow. He created a Tumblr for their photos which is still used today.
He said one of the most valuable things he learned was to set his camera down and talk to people.
After his time at the Reporter he worked as a freelance photographer before getting a job doing News Apps.
Currently, Villa is an interactive producer for the San Francisco Chronicle.
