The Office of the County Council is recruiting a communications specialist to work under the direction of the County Council’s Legislative Information Officer. The employee in this position develops informational material for the public about the Council’s activities and implements communications strategies, including print, electronic, and social media.

The position requires exceptional writing skills, an understanding of public policy issues in Montgomery County, proficiency in using social media tools, and experience with community outreach and engagement.

This position will be responsible for the following:

  • Assisting the legislative information officer with developing and implementing communications plans, writing press releases, statements and e-blasts
  • Managing content for social media and the Council’s website
  • Organizing and implementing community outreach activities, organizing press events and pushing out breaking news and emergency information to residents in real time
  • Additional duties as assigned

The successful candidate will possess outstanding communications skills, the ability to multi-task and work under tight deadlines with multiple priorities.

This position requires the ability to attend meetings at locations outside of the office and beyond traditional work hours.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, public relations or related field.

Experience: Three (3) years of professional experience in journalism, communications, public relations or related field.

Equivalency: An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.

Preferred Criteria
