The Roanoke Times is looking for a smart, agile journalist to work as a designer on its universal night desk. This editor will focus on designing news and sports pages, but will also edit copy and write headlines. The successful candidate will be able to communicate effectively with reporters, photographers and other editors to make reader-centered decisions about content and packaging for our metro daily that serves the Roanoke and New River valleys in Southwest Virginia.
The ideal candidate will have keen news judgment, an eye for detail and strong language skills. We're looking for someone who is collegial and collaborative and who won't be constrained by a title. We want a flexible editor -- someone who won’t mind designing and editing sports tonight, laying out the front page tomorrow and outputting pages the night after that. This person should be able to work within a team as well as have the ability to complete projects independently.
Our universal night desk handles content for all sections -- news, sports and features. The successful candidate will need to become proficient in our print publishing system as well as our online content management system and how the two work together. When applying for this position, please include a cover letter and several samples of your page design.
Essential duties and responsibilities include: Conceptualize and design pages on tight deadlines for the local, national and sports sections. • Collaborate with photographers, artists and team leaders to develop and design breakouts and visual elements that help tell the story. • Collaborate with editors and copy editors to develop and design alternative story forms. • Work on advance pages and special projects as needed. • Troubleshoot and output pages from our Town News publishing software which is Adobe InDesign based. • Edit copy and write headlines as needed. • Stay current on our coverage and the big headlines from national and international news. • Work nights, weekends and holidays Requirements • Bachelor's degree • Daily newspaper design experience preferred. • A visual eye and a sense of what's missing, what's needed and how the pieces of a package work together. • Strong grasp of technology and the ability to troubleshoot and solve technical problems. • Ability to be decisive and to adapt quickly and comfortably to change. • Experience with Adobe InDesign.
