The Washington Post’s Emerging News Products team has an opening for a deputy design director. This role requires an experienced, well-rounded visual journalist who will work closely with the design director to produce bold reader experiences across our suite of products. The deputy design director will manage a team of designers and focus on shaping the overall editorial design strategy for The Post’s national tablet and phone app. This person will also contribute to our other core products: Snapchat Discover, The Lily and Apple News.
We are looking for a candidate with experience in a fast-paced, live-news environment who can think creatively about how we deliver journalism to new audiences. Strong typography and conceptual illustration skills are key. Previous management and front-end development skills are a plus.
A day in the life of the deputy design director might require working on our national app, coaching team members and presenting ideas to the design director on how to make the app a more consistent and dynamic visual experience.
It is essential that this person be a leader who is excited about the future of news across tiny and big screens. It also helps to have a spirit of curiosity, as we’ll be experimenting with approaches on evolving and emerging platforms.
Interested candidates should send a cover letter, resume and link to a portfolio of work to Christopher Meighan ([email protected]), Amy King ([email protected]) or Tracy Grant ([email protected]) by October 15.
