The Gazette, an award winning daily newspaper located in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, is looking for a talented copy editor/designer with a love of language and the ability to bring pieces together into a strong presentation in print or digital formats. Our ideal candidate blends editing for grammar & clarity with understanding presentation and design skills that bring content to life for our audience. Working in an evolving, fast-paced newsroom, the ideal candidate will be versatile, attentive to detail and cool under pressure. You’ll understand editing for both digital and print audiences as well as how text, visuals, graphics and other various pieces come together to create an impactful presentation.


This position is responsible for writing headlines, promos, captions and content, designing and constructing news and features pages in accordance with style, as well as using strong grammar, proofreading and editing skills/command of AP style to edit content.


Our organization:

Our news operation is combines print and digital for The Gazette,, and several niche sites. Our company has a strong tradition of being independent and is employee-owned. The majority of our news team is focused on enterprise reporting, and we have a strong spirit of collaboration with other news outlets. While we’re focused in Cedar Rapids -- Iowa’s second-largest city – we have bureaus in Des Moines and Iowa City. The region is rich with things to do outside of work hours.


Qualifications & Requirements:

The ideal candidate will be a flexible, self-motivated, problem solver who works well on a team and has excellent communication skills. You should be attentive to detail, have sound news judgment, be familiar with design software (InDesign) and have awareness of editing, design and cultural trends. Candidate must be highly organized, a confident decision maker and committed to ongoing improvement and coaching. Candidate must also be organized and able to juggle multiple tasks. This position is required to work nights, weekends and holidays as assigned.


This position requires a degree in journalism or related field and at least two years of related experience at a newspaper.
