SNDDC organizers Matt Mansfield and Greg Manifold welcome attendees, take care of some SND business and kick off the annual workshop with a preview of the jam-packed days ahead.
Design Director, The Washington Post
Greg Manifold is the Design Director at The Washington Post where he leads a team responsible for the design of the newspaper as well as long-form digital projects. The team boldly approaches story telling while collaborating with a world-class team of reporters, editors, photographers, graphic artists and digital designers. Greg has been at The Post since 2005 and has also worked at The San Diego Union-Tribune and The Tribune in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
Professor, Northwestern University
Matt Mansfield is the Workshop Chair for SNDDC and a Visiting Professor at Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism. He’s based in Washington. D.C. Matt was previously the Executive Editor, Digital at National Geographic, where he was responsible for the editorial experience on all digital platforms. Prior to that, Matt was an Associate Professor at Medill, where he was Washington Director and, before that, Co-Director. In another life, he was a Deputy Managing Editor of the San Jose Mercury News, which was judged a World’s Best-Designed™ newspaper and honored with more than 150 other awards in the Best of News Design during his tenure. While a professor, Matt has consulted on design and reporting projects for Bloomberg, The Washington Post, CQ/Roll Call, McClatchy, and Advance, among others. He has served as president of the Society for News Design, program co-chair for the Online News Association’s annual conference last fall, and is a co-organizer of the #ONADC meetups.
