With the start of the new years comes a number of new appointments for the Society for News Design board. These folks are taking over for former board members whose appointments ended in 2012 or who moved to other positions.
SND’s board is made up of more than 20 volunteers who focus on different parts of making SND go, whether a geographic area or an area of expertise, like the website or training.

What sites are the World’s Best Designed? We’re looking for your ideas for the World’s Best Designed websites and mobile apps. A group of judges will go over all submissions and ideas in February, but first we’d like to hear from you. Send us your ideas.

The Society for News Design Foundation will fund one 12-week internship for Summer 2013. The internship will pay one deserving student $500/week to work at one deserving newspaper for a period of 12 weeks. Interested students and newspapers are invited to apply. In order to qualify, a newspaper must demonstrate that it has no paid internships in the areas of design (print and/or digital), information graphics, or photography/videography. Interested students must submit an application that includes a cover letter, resume, 10-piece digital portfolio and letter of recommendation.
The deadline for applications from both students and newspapers is February 28, 2013.

Ben Pirotte is this year’s recipient of the SND Foundation Internship. This is the second year of a program that matches student candidates with publications that no longer can afford to offer paid internships for visual journalists. This is the first of an occasional series of updates on how his internship is progressing.
Deadlines are looming for two SND Foundation programs to help students to further their education and experience. Don’t miss the deadlines to apply: May 28 for annual workshop travel grants and June 4 for the SNDF Scholarship.
