SND 2020 is less than 40 days away and we are very excited about our first virtual conference. The virtual conference gives us the opportunity to connect with visual designers and leaders from around the world. We have over 30 sessions planned with speakers spanning 4 continents joining us throughout the workshop. They will bring their expertise and knowledge to our attendees over several days, allowing you join us when you can, but also watch recorded sessions if you were unable to attend.
Haven’t registered yet? You should and here is why:
Three Days of Sessions Dedicated to Students and, For the First Time, Educators.
No need to worry about carving out an extra day in your schedule for student focused sessions. Each Tuesday will be sessions designed specifically for students. We know returning to the classroom this year will not be easy. Sessions on Saturday, Sept 19 will focus on educators as they adapt to the new classroom environment. For more details on this, check out our conference website.
Portfolio Review Week: It’s Not Just for Students.
This year we are extending our portfolio reviews for a full week and it will be open to all registered attendees of the workshop. Review sessions will be available before and after workshop session hours. Keep an eye out for more details to come soon about how to sign up for a portfolio review. If you are interested in being a portfolio reviewer, please sign up today!
We will be joined by visual storytelling legends Susan Goldberg, Dr. Mario Garcia and Nigel Holmes.
Susan Goldberg is Editor in Chief of National Geographic and Editorial Director of National Geographic Partners. As Editorial Director, she leads all journalism across platforms, including digital journalism, magazines, podcasts, maps and Instagram. She was named Editorial Director in October 2015 and Editor in Chief of National Geographic Magazine in April 2014. She is the 10th editor, and first female editor, of the magazine since it was first published in October 1888.
Dr. Mario Garcia is CEO of Garcia Media. He is also a professor of journalism at Columbia University’s School or Journalism, where he is Senior Adviser for News Design. Dr. Garcia has been a consultant to over 700 media organizations in 120 countries. His latest book is The Story, all about mobile storytelling. Mario has received over 300 SND Awards including the Lifetime Achievement Award. People Magazine selected Mario among the 100 Most Influential Hispanics. The University of Missouri awarded Mario its Medal of Honor in Journalism.
Nigel Holmes studied illustration at the Royal College of Art in London and then freelanced for magazines and newspapers for 12 years before coming to America in 1978 to work for Time Magazine. He became graphics director and stayed there for 16 years. He has written 10 books. Some directly address the practice of information design; others are entirely filled with information graphics — the latest is The Bigger Book of Everything, to be published by Lonely Planet in May 2020. Also, there’s a book for children, Pinhole and the Expedition to the Jungle, with lots of maps and diagrams in it.
Design Lightning Talks Are Back
We’re excited to have lightning talks returning to the program this year for the SND Virtual Workshop.
These fast-paced talks use an alternative presentation format that challenges the speakers to summarize their message into a bite-sized length — because they are limited to just 20 slides, each auto-advancing every 15 seconds. Each presentation is only 5 minutes long, so we’ll cover lots of topics quickly. Up for the challenge or want to nominate/recommend someone? Share your topic ideas and contact info in this form — spots are limited and filling up fast.
A Special Hand-On Session with Deborah Withey
If you have not attended a hands-on session with Deborah Withey, you have been missing out. Deb will be hosting a virtual hands-on session, “Bigtime Colour Immersion Therapy” on Saturday, Sept. 26. This session will be open to anyone who registers for the conference.
Can’t Make All the Sessions? We Have You Covered.
This year, all of our sessions will be recorded and available only to registered attendees.
Worried about missing a session? Not a problem. We will be recording every session and they will be available behind a paywall to registered attendees only within 24 hours of each session.
Registration is open. SND Members will need to log into their SND account to access the membership savings. If you are having trouble or unsure of your account information, there are details on SND.org and the SND 2020 registration page for you. We look forward to seeing many of your soon. Follow SND on Instagram and Twitter to stay up to date on speaker announcements, sessions, news and more.
