Enter the 2019 SND Best of Student Design Competition

Students: share your voice. The Best of Student Design annual competition, hosted by Michigan State University, gives students a chance to have their design work at a campus publication — as well as also projects done for a class, a job or an internship — appraised by top professionals.

Last year’s competition attracted nearly 300 entries — we hope to top that this year. Click here to view last year’s winners and get a sense of the competition.

This is the 20th anniversary of the MSU competition, which — in addition to the Student Designer of the Year, World’s Best Designed Student News Site, and Best Designed Student Newspaper — features 13 categories:

  • Front Page Design
  • Sports Page Design
  • Feature Page Design
  • Special Sections
  • Magazine Cover
  • Magazine Spread
  • Alternative Story Format
  • Art & Illustration
  • Photo Story Design
  • Infographics
  • Promotions & Advertising
  • Standalone Media
  • Digital Storytelling

Many beginning student designers demonstrate incredible talent, but they do so in the classroom or at a part-time job. And some of the most talented visual journalists—for a variety of reasons—do not work at their campus newspaper. These students are usually ineligible for other college design competitions, where contest rules often limit entries to work done for a student newspaper or magazine. The MSU Design Contest was established to give those other students a voice in a national competition.
