Most excited about … : There might not be one part that I am most excited about. I am excited about the big picture; being able to go to a national conference filled with the big wigs of the industry and those willing to learn how to get there. Also I have never been to Louisville so I am ready to check off a cool new city to explore. I can’t wait to network and meet people who are as excited about design, print, and new media as I am!

Ellen Collier, Ball State University, junior

Experience: I was the summer 2013 Art Intern for Indianapolis MonthlyI was previously a Chief Designer for the Ball State Daily News, iPad Design Editor for Ball Bearings Magazine (BSU’s student magazine) and iPad Design Editor for 72 HRS iPad Editions (weekend college guide). I am currently an Interactive Designer and Project Manager for BSU’s Digital Publishing Studio, where we design interactive tablet publications. I’m also the iPad Managing Editor for Ball Bearings this year.

Involvement with SND: I learned about SND through upperclassmen when I first came to Ball State. Editors of student media raved about how they loved going to the conferences and have met so many amazing people through SND. I started going to meetings, and I not only learned value design principles, but I also met some of my good friends today who were members of our SND chapter. I attended the “Best of Digital Design” judging that took place at Ball State this year.

Most excited about … : I’m most looking forward to meeting people who have similar interests and goals as myself at SND Lou. I love geeking out about design and fonts and colors with people who are as crazy about it as I am!

Experience: This past summer I interned on the design desk at the Denver Post doing everything from A1 and sports pages to graphics and creating iPad ebooks. I also spent six months at the Boston Globe as the design co-op designing during the 2013 London Olympics and presidential election. While there, I worked in every department with a strong focus in features. I’m currently spending five months designing at the Minneapolis Star Tribune. At school, I was previously the editor in chief of CSU’s independent, student-run daily, The Rocky Mountain Collegian. I’ve also served as the paper’s chief designer and visual managing editor.

Involvement with SND: I became involved with SND in February of 2010 when Shraddha Swaroop asked me to be the Colorado State leader. I gladly accepted and have fell in love with every aspect of the organization. SNDLOU will be my fourth conference.

Most excited about … : I think it’s tough to say what I’m most excited for this year in Lousiville. So far the speaker announcements sound stellar with a strong emphasis in digital and tablet which is really exciting and just goes to show how great SND is about keeping on top of what’s important. But I’m also excited to see designers that I don’t get to see that often. SND is such a social organization and the people are what make it great, so getting to meet new people and catch up with old friends will be great!
