The Return of the Best of Sports Design

The Best of Sports Design is coming back.

The competition — free to enter, easy to enter, open to print and digital contestants — ran from 2006-2009 at, the now-defunct sports design blog. The final award given out was the 2009 Sports Designer of the Year, which was announced right here at SND.

In 2006 we had about 350 entries from around the world and were at 600 by 2009.

Full details won’t be announced until mid-February, after the SND34 print competition, but expect a call for entries, a month to enter, and another month for judging, winners and voting to happen. We’ll keep a similar format, panels of judges will pick winners in each category, and then we can all vote for our favorites — Editors’ Choice — in each category. We’ll once again have live page, enterprise, special section, photo, special coverage and student design categories. If we can, we’ll also expand digitally beyond just web projects and multimedia graphics, though interest in entering will dictate that more than I will.

In the interim, help me out. If you’re entering a sports portfolio in the SND contest, squirrel away a PDF or JPEG of your entry or entries. Do the same for any special coverage, special sections or long-form entries you may be considering. Without a year of sports design blogging to reference, it will be exponentially tougher to name a sports designer of the year, but we’re going to give it a go.

Between now and then, help spread the word, including to students, who in the past have had a big part in the competition.
