Muncie hackfest: SND’s Best of Digital Design

Welcome to the Society for News Design’s digital competition, live from Ball State University in Muncie, Ind. Ten judges and a bevy of hardworking students have gathered to recognize excellence in design and usability of digital news design, information graphics and photography.

You’ll meet the judges in more depth in this space soon, but here is a preview: Tyson Evans of the New York Times, Miranda Mulligan of the Boston Globe, Jeremy Gilbert of Northwestern University, Ryan Mark of the Chicago Tribune, Jennifer George- Palilonis of Ball State University (and SND’s Education Director), Chris Clonts of the (St. Paul) Pioneer-Press (, Yuri Victor of the San Diego Union-Tribune, Jennifer Imes of the Indianapolis Star, Danny Gawlowski of the Seattle Times, and Jason Luebke of Matchbin.

The judges are reviewing almost 500 entries from all around the world in categories that span Web site design, graphics, photography and video, breaking news and extended coverage, mobile and app design.

At the end the judges will select the World’s Best Designed News site and apps.
