This design portfolio showcases pages following China’s Sichuan earthquake in May, 2008. Lily Lu, regional director of SND Chinese, collects 40 pages from 40 newspapers to illustrate the courageous design from the country’s visual journalists during a devastating moment.
Looking at these pages, one can easily across the language barrier to feel the sadness which the nation endured. Witness the courage and hope the Chinese people showed the world and cheer our Chinese peers for a job well done!
Please feel free to comment on the work. The designers of these pages will appreciate very much for your encouragement and input!
Lily Lu is regional director of SND Chinese and a designer at The Star-Ledger in Newark, N.J.

All of these pages drive home the power of pure design in conveying raw emotion.
Absolutely inspiring. Thanks for sharing, Lily!
Powerful work in any language.
It’s fantastic that SND has reached out to newspapers in China. Will there be any outreach to the Chinese-American / Chinese language newspapers stateside? Whenever I look through my mother’s newspapers, I’m amazed by their different sensibilities.
Reaching out to the Chinese language newspapers in the states is a part of the plan. So far, I haven’t gotten a positive response from the papers I’ve contacted in the states.
Martin, if you are going to the SNDVegas, I’d love to meet you, (I will buy you a cup of coffee) and talk about this, or any ideas you care to share.
Thanks!
These designs scream out words we no longer need to here. Very inspiring and real.
