Ohio U student wins first SNDF Scholarship

Lisa S. Merklin, a senior studying at the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism and the School of Visual Communication at Ohio University in Athens, is the first recipient of the new $2,000 Society for News Design Foundation Scholarship.

At SND Las Vegas the SND Foundation also sponsored a travel grant program for minority students with support from the Gannett Foundation and a research project into the different strategic visions held by different newsroom professions.

The SND Foundation is embarking on its first major fund-raising drive and has received a $15,000 challenge grant from the Challenge Fund for Journalism.

Submit a cover design for the 30th "Best of" book

SND's second book cover design competition was announced in Las Vegas at the 30th Annual Workshop & Exhibition. Entries for the cover of "The Best of Newspaper Design™" are due Nov. 27, 2008.

Next Best of Multimedia Design deadline: Jan. 7, 2009

Online journalism projects published between Oct. 1 and Dec. 31, 2008, must be submitted to the Best of Multimedia Design Competition by midnight Jan. 7, 2009, for consideration. Judges will name quarterly winners, and those winners will be eligible for 2008-09 annual awards. Entrants also receive judges' comments on their entries.

What 10 news design students won at SND Vegas

Ten top visual journalism students earned paid 2009 internships and educational fellowships as part of a competition held at the Society for News Design’s 30th Annual Workshop & Exhibition, Sept. 7-9, 2008, in Las Vegas.

The winners and the companies where they will intern are:

Four students were awarded Poynter Institute Fellowships, a yearlong training and mentoring program with faculty at The Poynter Institute for Media Studies in St. Petersburg, Fla. They are: Mike Higdon, University of Nevada, Reno; Rob Byrd, Coastal Carolina University, Conway, S.C.; Colin Bridge, University of New Mexico, Albuquerque; Ali Newton, Ball State University, Muncie, Ind.
