The Society for News Design has selected four "World’s Best-Designed Newspapers™,” all from Europe, for this year's “The Best of Newspaper Design™ Creative Competition.” Meeting at Syracuse University in New York, an international panel of judges selected the winners from 351 entries representing dozens of countries. The judges evaluated newspaper issues published in 2006. La Society for News Design (SND) ha seleccionado a los cuatro Periódicos mejor diseñados del mundo TM en la 28 edición de sus premios anuales Lo Mejor del diseño de periódicos TM. Los cuatro ganadores de este año son publicaciones europeas. Un jurado internacional reunido en la Universidad de Siracusa (Syracuse), Nueva York, seleccionó a los ganadores de entre 351 participantes provenientes de decenas de países. The judges’ statement: 351 papers, four days, four judges. One mission: to find publications that set a standard of excellence, not just by the masterful execution of their pages, but by their ability to speak with a voice. We sought innovation and surprise, more than perfection. In recent years our industry has been plagued with many ailments; declining readerships and revenues, a lack of resources, the continuing exodus of talent from our newsrooms and even, self-inflicted wounds. This cannot be ignored. In an imperfect world, some surrender to their circumstances while others find the energy and the enthusiasm to make the most of the situation. This became evident through the numerous pages that we reviewed. We saw a lot of great individual pages; the challenge was to find excellence from cover to cover. We learned that a significant percent – even among high circulation dailies - neglected basic typography. That is a real concern. In the end, we chose four very different newspapers that excelled above all others. We found elegance, visual virtuosity, raw energy, grit and innovation. Meet this year’s winners ...
