Formerly known as the SND.ies, this annual competition rewards skill, innovation and high-quality digital journalism. The competition was launched in 2002 and invites entries from all news sites published anywhere in the world.
Each annual competition covers one calendar year. Entries are submitted during December, with judging taking place in January and February. Winners are announced when they are verified. The competition offers several categories encompassing presentation of individual stories to overall design across different types of platforms.
Competition judges may issue Awards of Excellence, Silver Medals, Gold Medals and Best of Show honors. An additional Judges’ Special Recognition award may be given to any winner, or for a body of work. Judges may also select a Best of Show. At the discretion of the judges, there may be no awards given.
All entries must be submitted online through http://digital.snd.org
Winners in the World’s Best Design News Sites category are announced at the SND Annual Workshop and Exhibition Awards Ceremony.

The Digital Design Competition Director, a member of the SND Board, selects judges for these awards. Judges for the competition are journalism, new media and design experts from around the world. There are about 15-20 judges. Each judge is randomly assigned an equal number of entries to assess. No judges are assigned entries to evaluate if any conflicts of interest are apparent.
SND invites suggestions and nominations for judges. Self-nominations are welcome. To make a nomination, send an e-mail to competition coordinator Ryan Sparrow at firstname.lastname@example.org. Please include the e-mail address of the nominee and a brief description of his or her qualifications.
