All SND Charlotte workshop venues are located in Uptown Charlotte, with the exception of the U.S. National Whitewater Center (transportation to and from this location will be provided). Workshop attendees should not need to rent a car, unless there is a desire to venture beyond these venues.
MAIN WORKSHOP VENUE AND OFFICIAL HOTEL OF UNITE & REBEL
The extensively renovated and award-winning Sheraton Charlotte Hotel provides a picture-perfect backdrop against which to explore the sights and sounds of Uptown. The Sheraton boasts two dining options — Social Bar & Kitchen and Evoke, which was ranked as one of the Top 10 restaurants in the city by Charlotte Magazine. After dinner, we recommend having a drink and taking in the best view of the Charlotte skyline at City Lights Rooftop Bar. The Sheraton also offers a 24/7 fitness center available to all guests, and an indoor pool. Parking is available on site for $20 per day. Remember, the Society for News Design has a discount rate of $179 per night, which is available three days before the workshop begins, and three after the workshop ends.
U.S. NATIONAL WHITEWATER CENTER
PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOP AND OPENING RECEPTION VENUE
The U.S. National Whitewater Center (USNWC) is dedicated to the promotion of an active, outdoor lifestyle. Guests can enjoy whitewater rafting and kayaking, flatwater kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, rock climbing, zip lines, ropes courses, a canopy tour, and mountain biking on its 30+ mile trail system. The USNWC utilizes various adventure sports and natural environments onsite to develop leadership and communication skills. The pre-conference workshop — Think Before You Make, sponsored and organized by Upstatement and CQ Roll Call — will utilize this world-class space for a day of problem solving through design. SND Charlotte will kick-off its opening reception at the Whitewater Center. Shuttle buses to USNWC will be provided from the Sheraton Hotel.
CJ’S NIGHT CLUB
KARAOKE NIGHT VENUE
This venue, located inside the Sheraton Hotel, was once one of the most happening clubs in Uptown and still has the feel of a classic ’70s nightclub. This atmosphere makes it the perfect spot to hold our annual Karaoke Night Fundraiser, sponsored by Maps4News. The karaoke event gives you the chance to sing — or challenge someone to sing — for a small donation. All proceeds will be donated to the SND Foundation. Still not convinced you should join the fun? The first round of drinks is on the house, courtesy of the Maps4News crew!
NASCAR HALL OF FAME
CLOSING RECEPTION VENUE
Located in Uptown (just half a mile from the Sheraton Hotel), the 150,000-square-foot NASCAR Hall of Fame is an interactive, entertainment attraction honoring the history and heritage of NASCAR. The high-tech venue, designed to educate and entertain race fans and non-fans alike, includes artifacts, interactive exhibits, and a 278-seat state-of-the-art theater. SND Charlotte attendees will have unlimited access to the Hall’s racing activities and driving simulator, a state-of-the-art attraction giving visitors a driver’s perspective of race day.
AMERICAN CITY BUSINESS JOURNALS
STUDENT DAY VENUE
American City Business Journals is a multi-platform media company providing in-depth coverage of local business communities and breaking news in more than 40 cities across the country. ACBJ headquarters will host the student-only workshop, which will include a handful of speakers, portfolio critiques and a free lunch. The building is about a 20-minute walk from the Sheraton Hotel.
