In an effort to make our members aware of officer and board member initiatives, the Society For News Design leadership team is sharing reports from the spring board meeting that took place last weekend in Louisville, KY. After combing through numerous applications, a panel convened by SNDF education chair Darren Sanefski settled on Lisa Donato, a freshman at the University of Oregon, as the recipient of this year’s paid summer internship. Lisa will be working with Frank Mina and the great team at the San Francisco Chronicle beginning in July.

Three major grants totaling $56,000 give SND the means to provide free training events for SND members and the visual journalism community at large.

At the awards gathering at SND’s workshop in Cleveland this fall SND presented its Lifetime Achievement Award to Roger Black and Deb Withey. The Lifetime Achievement Award is the highest individual honor the Society can bestow and only 19 have received the it.
Roger’s vision and leadership has set the standard for newspaper and magazine design. His work with type and digital platforms has lead the way far out ahead of the rest of the industry. See the slideshow and read the script from the ceremony here.

The Society for News Design is seeking nominations for the office of Secretary/Treasurer for 2013. This is an open-ballot position: anyone who is nominated, meets the requirements of the position and chooses to run will appear on the ballot.
Nominees must be members of the Society in good standing, with a history of service to the organization. Nominations will be accepted through Friday, Aug. 10. (Voting will begin on Sept. 10)

The Society for News Design is honored to announce our first Middle East News Design Conference, which boasts an impressive roster of speakers and topics, all set in the gorgeous and vibrant cosmopolitan seaport of Beirut, the Pearl of the Middle East.
This two-day event starts Nov. 8. It is co-sponsored by the Lebanon’s leading daily newspaper, An-Nahar.

Ben Pirotte is this year’s recipient of the SND Foundation Internship. This is the second year of a program that matches student candidates with publications that no longer can afford to offer paid internships for visual journalists. The deadline for SND’s Best of Digital Design competition is coming right up. You have until Feb. 15 to get your entries up against the best sites, apps and digital work from around the world. Our team of judges from around the world will pick the best data-driven projects, photography and video, overall site design and usability and mobile and tablet apps.
