The spectrum of Category 12 (Magazines)

This year for the first time, the Category 12 was opened up to magazines not distributed as part of a paper. “A lot of what we’re doing is moving more toward a magazine style,” said judge Frank Mina, AME for Presentation at the San Francisco Chronicle. Here’s a sampling of what the judges are seeing today, featuring the colors of the rainbow..
Day Two: In the can

As the 31st Best of News Design™ Competition ground late into Sunday night (game? what football game?) legs grew weary, eyes strained and chips continued dropping. By the end of our second verr-ry long day at the judging site, thousands of entries had been reviewed — and weeded out. More than 600 awards of excellence had been given; 33 silvers and 3 golds had been awarded.
This evening is reserved for rockin’ (we’re headed back to the hotel “early” after more than 12 hours on-site for the SND Foundation karaoke fundraiser — it’s for students, so buck up and sing already).

Student volunteers from Syracuse and Ball State are on hand, laying down pages and then scooping them up, finding inspiration on every table and listening in on judges’ conversations about what works and what doesn’t. “It’s such an incredible experience, just to be here, to hear what the judges are saying, to see it all from a different perspective,” said Chelsea Kardokus, a Ball State freshman. First gold medals awarded

As the snow begins to fall on Day Two of the 31st Best of News Design™ Competition, we’ve learned there were at least 16 silver medals awarded late Saturday night. The first two gold medals of the weekend were both awarded in the photo categories. Congratulations to The New York Times Magazine and The Denver Post for their wins.

Chuck Burke has been taping up his SND entries and studying the annuals for more than 10 years, but this is his first time in Syracuse at the competition. “I just want to say to all of my friends and acquaintances who have judged before: Thanks, scumbags, for leaving me in the dark about these five particular things, which would have been nice to be told in advance. Not that I would have necessarily believed you anyway…”
Day One: The easy part is done

We’ve seen a few winners, we’ve seen many more cast aside and we’ve even managed to witness a couple of gold medal winners in the first day of the competition. What does that forecast for Day Two? While the judges managed to make it through 6,000 of the 10,000+ entries in day one, Day Two always bleeds into Day Three as longer form categories dominate the tables.
