In an effort to make our members aware of officer and board member initiatives, the Society For News Design leadership team is sharing reports from the spring board meeting. This is the first in a three part series of posts, which will also include reports from program and region directors.

Officer’s Report

Rob Schneider, President
David Kordalski, Vice President
Lee Steele, Secretary/Treasurer
Jonathon Berlin, Immediate Past President

WHERE WE STAND NOW: We had a challenging year in 2012, for many reasons. But thanks to a lot of hard work in the last six months, 2013 promises to be a lot better and more financially stable year for SND. For that work, we owe a great deal of thanks to Executive Director Stephen Komives and the work of Jonathon Berlin and Marshall Matlock in 2012 to help transition the creative competition to a more efficient cost structure. We did a great job of cutting expenses this year while contest revenue stayed strong and performed better than budgeted. So we are financially strong right now. But we still have some fundamental problems looming for the future, especially our drop in membership revenue.

TRAINING: In addition, we’ve secured the three largest grants in SND history that have not only help our financial bottom line, but also given us a much more robust training lineup for 2013. So we will have 12 training events on the calendar for the rest of the year, most of which are free to members or available at a low cost! Stephen Komives is helping organize eight free iPad/Mobile Design Quick Courses in locations across the U.S. and Canada (Washington, Chicago, Minneapolis, Toronto, Montreal and Louisville and a few more to be announced.) In addition, thanks to the work of Jeff Goertzen, SND will be hosting four “Graphics Garage” events (in Anaheim, Dallas, Chicago and Louisville.) And our international chapters continue to provide valuable training around the world.

COMMUNICATION: We are also committed to communicating better with our members and the visual journalism community as a whole, largely through our work on snd.org and social media. I’m proud of the work we’ve done this year continuing the “Conversation about Design” that Jonathon Berlin started last year on the site and we continue to identify opportunities to talk about design (most notably lately the coverage of the Boston Marathon terrorist attack.) Our goal is to be the visual voice of reason for journalists around the world and help fill a void in our industry right now, as many of our brethren have been taken out of newsrooms completely. We owe it to them, and to journalism as a whole, to continue to preach the principles that led to the creation of SND in the first place. We’ll also be sending out another great issue of Design magazine shortly (thanks to the help of Paul Wallen for finishing this issue. Paul is filling in for Suzette Moyer, who had to resign her position.)

Judges at SND34 in Syracuse, New York.

COMPETITIONS: In February, we completed our 34th Creative Competition in Syracuse (thanks to coordinator Melissa Angle for her great work as well as C. Marshall Matlock and Shamus Walker for their continued hard work) and our third edition of our Digital Competition in Muncie, Ind. (thanks especially to Ryan Sparrow, Jeremy Gilbert, Joey Marburger and Tyson Evans for their hard work.) Both of our competitions continue to evolve and improve (especially on the digital side, where the strides these past few years have been nothing short of amazing) and it’s my goal to continue that evolution and improvement with the ultimate goal of enhancing them as educational events (both in the process of how we run them but also how we communicate the results.) And I’ve already talked about how we have cut costs while competition revenue has remained steady.

THE BOOK: With that educational mission in mind, we are now working with the Steve Layton and Indiana University to produce our 34th edition of the Best of News Design. In addition to the printed book you receive, we’ll be offering digital versions of the 34th and 33rd editions of the book with an eye on making the digital experience of our competition results more robust, visual and valuable in the future.

INTERNATIONAL WORK: One of the most amazing facets of SND is the international reach of the organization and the amount of varied activity from our 21 regions in the world.

To that point:

In March, SND-E hosted the 21st edition of the Malofiej Awards and World Summit in Pamplona.

In May, SND Chinese is hosting a three day Quick Course featuring editorial illustration and storytelling across platforms.

SND Scandinavian recently completed its news design competition and will host its workshop Oct. 10-11 in Copenhagen.

SND-DACH is already hard at work preparing for our 2014 Workshop in Frankfurt.

SND’s Region 20 (Middle East and Africa) is in the process of running its own regional competition right now as well.

SND India had a milestone, with the first entries from its regional to the creative competition.

SNDLOU: Ryan Hildebrandt is preparing a great workshop that will bring together a multitude of visual journalism disciplines and will focus on inspiration, education and examining the “why” behind the decisions we make across platforms. We’ll also be celebrating SND’s 35th anniversary this November. We’ll talk about how our history, and especially our origins, can help guide us to best serve our mission in the future. We are currently working on partnering with another organization that will help us look forward and to the future in a smart way that will help instruct SND’s future path.

WEBSITE: Digital director Kyle Ellis is working hard not only to develop new and better content for our website and other digital and social media offerings but also to redesign snd.org to reflect what our members have told us they want and need. He’ll put together a “hack weekend” May 4-5 to help fix and redesign parts of the current site so those improvements will start rolling out soon. We’re also working to make our job board easier to use and search and work more seamlessly with our current site. In addition, Kyle has been working on a larger scale master plan for snd.org that is exciting to think about but will also require a big set of resources as well and we’ll start pursuing grants for that shortly as well.

GRANTS: Thanks to the leadership of Stephen Komives, we’ve secured the three largest grants in SND history over the past six months ($56,000, all of which have helped enhance our training.) And we’re pursuing more grant opportunities that will allow us to serve our members even better in the future. We’re also exploring more opportunities to partner with other journalism organizations in the future to better enhance our missions and the journalism community as a whole. We’ll spend some time this afternoon working on the beginnings of that process.

FOUNDATION: We’ll be working to refine our SND Foundation’s mission and increase our fundraising so that we can serve more students and journalists who desperately need our help and need the educational benefits we can give them. SNDF President Neal Pattison and SND Vice President David Kordalski will be leading that charge.

DATABASE: Lee Steele will be working with Stephen Komives to improve the quality and quantity of our competition databases on our website and explore the best path toward getting all 34 years of competition results in a digital space. In the immediate future, though, we will change our database vendor and get a much more stable system at a cheaper cost and one that will allow us to have the past 20 years of (from SND14 to SND 34) which itself will be an amazing improvement for the website that we’ll want to tell everyone about.

MEMBERSHIP: Membership continues to be a huge problem for us (we are losing about 100 members each year) and we’re going to work this afternoon to try and improve that by creating a corporate membership model that will better reflect the realities of the industry and help increase our revenue. The truth is we have to find a long-term strategy for membership to help SND build a stable revenue model for the future, otherwise our membership numbers reflect a ticking clock toward us having to make much more difficult decisions. We have to build a future blueprint for SND that features a viable, sustainable economic model that will give us more stability in the future. We’ve made great strides in this area over the past four years and we can’t stop now!

The SND Louisville workshop will take place November 7-9.

2014 WORKSHOP: I’m excited about all the hard work Stefan Knapp has put into Frankfurt 2014 and while it will be an exceptional workshop, we will also have to plan for a smaller contingent from the U.S. So this also creates an opportunity for us to explore having our 2015 workshop in the spring instead of the fall. It makes sense for a lot of reasons, and I think we could pick a great destination in the U.S. to host this workshop. We’ve already been laying the groundwork over the past few months and I’m hoping we can move toward making a decision on this in the next few months. We’ll explore some options Saturday afternoon as well.

2014 BOARD MEETING DATES: While we know our Fall 2014 board meeting will be in Frankfurt, we have an opportunity to find a different Spring 2014 board meeting location (and find a good logistical time to make a site visit to Frankfurt, possibly tying it to a SND officer visit to Malofiej in March 2014?) Orlando would be great site for the spring board meeting and it would be great to tie a Quick Course to that event as well. I’d like for us to identify a date for this event in the next month.

BOARD APPOINTMENTS: Jonathon Berlin did a great job filling a lot of vacant board positions last year and so we are mostly taken care of in this regard. However, the board positions are constantly fluid with people moving in and out of them so we need to create a backlog of good people who could possibly help us in the future. In addition, we’ve found this year that we may need to change the structure of some of the board positions to help us in certain areas. We’ll discuss more on Saturday afternoon.

Here are the 2013 goals for SND, as set by Rob Schneider, with input from other officers and the board:

OUTREACH: Communicate, Educate, Project (Our Future)

So, now, you’ve got your work cut out for you. One key change this round: you only get one vote. Use it wisely. (Note: After casting your vote the survey buttons will disappear, this only indicates that your ballot has been recorded).

Judges from across the globe met earlier this year in Syracuse and Muncie. They poured over thousands and thousands of print and digital entries and selected the best of print and digital news design. Now as the winners are assembled in SND’s Annual Best of News Design book, here’s your chance to be the judge: of the book’s cover. For the second year, SND is asking the design community vote on the cover of the book.

Here are the details:

Please vote for one (1) of the following submissions — which cover do you want to see on the front of the 33rd edition of the Best of News Design?

You are limited to one — period.

You vote by selecting the cover itself.

Voting will close on Friday, April 26, at 5 p.m. EDT.

The winning cover is subject to some changes as SND and the artist works through the book’s publication process.

It’s time for student designers to gather up their best work — contest dates for the 2013 College News Design Contest are now set!

Each year, the student Society for News Design chapter at the Missouri School of Journalism hosts the annual competition, which features several hundred entries from student designers across the globe. This year, we’re accepting print and digital designs in a range of categories.

The deadline for entries is Friday, April 5. Go here to enter.

All students enrolled at a two-year or four-year college are welcome to submit any work that was published between March 16, 2012 and March 15, 2013.

Designers who are no longer students, but who were enrolled when work was published, are also eligible. Each participant’s first entry is free and students who are named Print Designer of the Year and Multimedia/Digital Designer of the Year will each receive $750 toward a trip to the 2013 annual SND convention in Louisville, Kentucky. SND also co-sponsors the contest.

Visit our official website, ssnd.missouri.edu, for more information, and look here for more contest updates in the coming weeks.

And for a little inspiration, here are some 2012 winners:

The Society for News Design is thrilled to announce the 2012 World’s Best Designed news sites and apps: SB Nation, Lenta.ru and the Guardian and Observer iPad apps.

Judges met in Muncie in late February and reviewed hundreds of sites from around the globe. Sites were nominated by members and nonmembers through the Best of Digital Design site, self nominated via that same site, submitted through suggestions and outreach by SND’s 16 Regional Directors and from the SND34 digital judging teams.

The World’s Best judges Tyson Evans, Antonio Pasagali, Dave Stanton and Kaitlin Yarnall reviewed the entries, winnowed the list in multiple voting rounds and worked over the course of the weekend to choose the World’s Best Designed news sites and apps. Winners required a unanimous vote.

This is the third year SND has selected the World’s Best Designed sites and apps (Visit SND33 and SND32)

Judges’ Overall Statement

The baselines for digital news design are changing and becoming more mature. Over the past year responsive design and custom typography became expectations instead of an experimental exceptions. Touch compatibility is essential; Flash is prohibited. There’s a reductionist movement to confidently display hierarchy while tastefully integrating smart customization and social.

The web’s expanding toolkit is allowing sites to feel snappy and fluid. Conversely, the tablet space feels constrained by its tools. Tablet publications are either gratuitously interactive or notably stark, and the software used to produce them is all too obvious. There is a clear difference with web design being facilitated by burgeoning standards and native tablet design being restricted by available tools.

The lines are blurring between newspapers, magazines and television as the web matures into a medium reflective of its enormous reach and varied usage. The tools, talents and creativity we saw in this year’s submissions make us proud to be digital first.

Judging Team:

Tyson Evans, deputy editor, interactive news, The New York Times

Antonio Pasagali, creative director, Prodigioso Volcán (Madrid)

Dave Stanton, managing developer, Smart Media Creative

Kaitlin Yarnall, deputy creative director, National Geographic Magazine

World’s Best Designed Website: SB Nation

SB Nation pushes the boundaries of a news website. It is beautiful and visually compelling without gimmicks. Its design is intentional and clean. It is uniquely “sporty-elegant.” Photography is given a cinematic treatment and allowed to shine. Such photo-heavy layouts are frequently attempted on other Web sites, but often crumble under the distraction of poor photo editing, that is not the case on this site. Typography from Hoefler & Frere-Jones is beautifully deployed, underscoring how huge a leap Web type has made in recent years. The site also proves that template-driven design can be elevated to greatness.

The site is responsive in the most ambitious sense of the word. Complex, compelling, and innovative storytelling techniques make excel on a range of screen sizes. It shows some of the best thinking we have seen in the mobile space. Its framework is elastic and robust enough to support more than 300 niche sub-sites and blogs and still feel snappy. The site’s version history is published, which clearly illustrates the virtues of iterative design.

Breaking news and features are handled equally well. It employs “storystreams” that are the boldest attempt we’ve seen yet at imagining how stories thread together over time. These storystreams can be applied anywhere, but used judiciously, making them feel intentional and highlighting editorial intent. Overall SB Nation feels like a generational leap for a sports site, and a worthy beacon of forward-thinking design for news sites in general.

Overall we were impressed with its parent company, Vox Media. It is a company to be watched. The Vox team is improving significantly with each release instead of just riding a style until it falls flat.

World’s Best Designed Website: Lenta.ru

Overall we were inspired by the amazing creativity of Russian news design on the web. Many sites and apps impressed us but Lenta.ru rose above the rest.

Lenta looks and feels good. The site is beautifully designed with the right amount of clean and relaxing white space throughout the entire navigation experience. The type treatment is perfect and precise in terms of hierarchy The subtle yet functional details seemingly integrate perfectly into the UI. Also, the superb photo editing and the restrained yet consistent color palette make this site a pleasure to view.

It has the classic elegant look of big news site, yet still feels approachable, with its own fresh style touches. This is especially impressive given the amount of stories it produces and the size of its audience. The adaptive solution of the vertical navigation bar on the left seems appropriate and functional when experienced from a tablet or large browser. Across platforms the site feels consistent.

The article layouts are distinct from other news sites. The content is centered on the page without any disturbing elements in the right rail. It is beautifully executed.

The special project pages, archives, and other special areas of the site, amplify the overall beauty and identity of the site. It is simple, approachable and a pleasurable navigational experience.

World’s Best Designed iPad News App: The Guardian and Observer

The Guardian and Observer’s iPad experience is sublime. Each issue is rich in art direction, ambitious yet disciplined in its layout and features a jaw-dropping use of photography — particularly on a Retina device. The degree of both control and delight packed into each day’s issue is impressive. Navigation is intuitive and the finite nature of a day’s issue makes for a cohesive and offline-friendly snapshot of news. There are smart links to related content, both within the app and back to the Guardian’s Web site. With the smart use of simple tools — grid, color, typography — the app strikes a perfect balance of identity, style, serenity and pacing. The care and attention to detail of each article’s presentation is obvious and awesome for a daily publication.

Judge’s Special Recognition: StateFace by ProPublica

StateFace is a simple but ground-breaking design tool — a typeface of U.S. state shapes. The creativity and utility of leveraging a typeface to provide lightweight map shapes filled an obvious need and became quickly ubiquitous. We felt compelled to recognize StateFace after seeing its usage in so many election packages. Libraries and APIs don’t exist as distinct categories in this competition but perhaps should. We want to applaud and champion efforts to build tools that facilitate more effective, beautiful and faster design.

With the start of the new years comes a number of new appointments for the Society for News Design board. These folks are taking over for former board members whose appointments ended in 2012 or who moved to other positions.

He was instrumental in his company’s transition to centralized design facilities, where he guided the system build and workflow for more than 150 designers in three locations.
Officer positions

Read more about the officers on SND’s profile page.

Outgoing board members

Behind these new appointments are those that are coming to an end. This year’s group is an outstanding group of SND contributors who hopefully will stay involved in many ways. The outgoing immediate past-president Steve Dorsey has been on the SND board since dinosaurs roamed the earth. He’s been editor of the magazine, Design Journal, publications director, SND Foundation director and of course an officer. Denise Reagan, outgoing SND Foundation director has had a similar string of appointments including editing SND’s newsletter, running quick courses and more. Jennifer George-Palilonis has done an incredible job director the Foundation’s internships, travel grants and more. Shraddha Swaroop, in Region 2, and Michael Tribble, in Region 4 were two of SND’s best.

SND would like to thank those leaving posts and welcome those coming in. It’s easy to get involved in SND.

SND gathers world-renowned juries in Syracuse, NY, and Muncie, IN, to determine the top work in a variety of categories including the selection of the World’s Best Designed newspapers, websites and mobile apps.

SND has recognized the top work for the last 34 years. For the last three, we’ve evolved our Best of Digital News Design to reflect cutting edge digital work from Washington DC to Moscow, Madrid, Spain, to Mexico City. You’ll find an array of new categories this year designed to make it easier to submit your work, whether a newsapp, site redesign, interactive experience or mobile app.

Here is what you’ll need to know:

Print entry deadlines: U.S. submissions, Jan. 16, 2013; international submissions, Jan. 23, 2013.

After years of campaigning, gazillions of negative ads, thousands upon thousands of debates, oodles upon oodles of facts checked, gaffs that made their own gaffs, mailers, robocalls, stumping, swinging, polling, real-clear-politicking, all endlessly, breathlessly analyzed, re-analyzed and re-re-analyzed. And now we are here. Election Day 2012.

A day like no other.

Let's see what you've done. Show your work here at SND | Show Your Work on tumblr. Click on the submit button and you can post a text or image file. Ask a question and then we'll discuss, breakdown and breathlessly move on to the next big thing.

This week we'll focus on the election, but think of this as our digital gathering spot where you can start to come to check out each others work.
