The first day of judging for the 33rd edition of the Best of News Design™ is under way at the Drumlins Country Club on the campus of Syracuse University. Here’s a look at this year’s 21-member jury. Louis Silverstein’s innovations at The New York Times brought about a sweeping change to how newspapers were read and organized across the country. His ascension to Assistant Managing Editor also signalled a new place for visual journalists in the newsroom, that of equal partners. The Times’ obit can be read here.
Silverstein was honored with SND’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001. Design Journal issue 81 carried an account of the award presentation in Phoenix that year. His work was also featured in SND’s 25 Moment’s of News Design in 2004. SND founder Phillip Ritzenberg captured Silverstein’s significance to the craft in this excerpt from his presentation of Silverstein’s award in 2001.

The Society for News Design is proud to present its Lifetime Achievement Award to an innovator, leader, teacher, founder and friend: Roger Fidler.
Fidler, the digital program director at Digital Publishing Alliance at the University of Missouri’s Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute accepted the award at the awards banquet at the SND’s award banquet at its annual workshop in St. Louis Saturday.
Karsten Ivey of the Fort Lauderdale, FL Sun-Sentinel has been named Society for News Design’s regional director for the south eastern U.S. The region includes includes: TN, NC, SC, GA, AL, MS, FL, LA, AR, PR, TX, OK
“I’m very excited and looking forward to getting started, ” said Ivey.
Sajeev Kumar T.K, Visual Editor of Kerala Kaumudi based in Kerala, India, has been named Society for News Design regional director for Asia and South Pacific. TKsajeev runs a very popular website about design in India.
TKsajeev says, “I am excited about working for SND, and assure you my sincere effort towards promoting SND and its activities in Region 19.”
