SNDF Scholarships

In 2008, the Society for News Design announced two new scholarship programs for university students. The scholarships are funded by donations from visual journalists worldwide.

The first scholarship honors Edmund C. Arnold (1913-2007), viewed by SND members as the father of U.S. newspaper design. Ed Arnold redesigned hundreds of newspapers and inspired thousands of visual journalists as an author, consultant, speaker and journalism educator at Syracuse (New York) University and Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond.

The Arnold scholarship is open to SND student members at Syracuse University who are majoring in journalism or in a field of related study, with the intent of pursuing a career in visual journalism.

The $5,000 scholarship is offered to juniors and rising seniors. Applicants are assessed on talent, scholarship, service and character. The annual award is renewable once, but recipients must re-apply for consideration. The first Arnold scholarship will be awarded in 2009.

The SND Foundation scholarship is an annual $2,000 award open to sophomores, juniors and seniors interested in and showing promise for pursuing a career in visual journalism at any accredited four-year school worldwide. The student must be a member in good standing of the Society for News Design. The annual award is renewable once, but recipients must re-apply for consideration.

The first SND Foundation scholarship was awarded to Lisa Merklin (right) of Ohio University in 2008.
