John Niedermeyer is the Deputy Editor for Digital News Design at The New York Times. He leads a team of digital designers in the newsroom who craft and build visually-rich story presentations, digital-first interactive features, and special packages for planned news events. Partnering with every unit in the newsroom — including traditional reporters and editors, photo, video and graphic journalists, as well as technologists — the team is tasked with giving readers the best digital expression of Times journalism. Prior to this role, he was the lead designer for the Times digital subscription model, and designed two iPhone apps.
Laura Koot began her journalism career as the third grade classroom reporter for her school newspaper. Now she is the managing editor and at director of The National newspaper in the United Arab Emirates. In between, she worked as a reporter, columnist, copy editor, assigning editor, page editor, night editor, designer and presentation editor. She has helped launch two national newspapers: the National Post in Canada as well as her current labour of love in Abu Dhabi. She likes pie, especially cherry.
Juan Velasco is the senior editor for art and graphics at National Geographic magazine and a graphics consultant. He previously worked for El Mundo (Spain) and as the graphics art director for The New York Times. In 2001, he founded his own company, 5W Infographics. Juan has won over a hundred SND and Malofiej awards and was also a Pulitzer Prize finalist.
