Charles Apple veered from his characteristic and informative visual journalism talks, and instead, delivered an evangelical message to the more than 100 folks who turned out to hear him.

He took an uncomfortable topic all too familiar to most of us, and turned it into an inspirational call to be ready to remake ourselves when the moment arises, whether it’s a layoff or an opportunity.

Apple turned what we all know as a devastating reality into a positive charge to do what we love best.

His examples of many successful and talented folks in the business who changed their paths showed us we are not limited to what we currently do.

The key, Apple said, is to take our journalistic knowledge and apply it to whatever we do. And we will succeed again. Because we don’t suck.
