SND 33: We want you as a Judge, or Facilitator
We’d like your help in finding facilitators and judges for next year’s Best of News Design™ Creative Competiton.
Becoming a facilitator
About 30 professional SND volunteers assist with the annual judging in February at Syracuse University. Anyone interested in serving as a facilitator should send an e-mail beginning at 12 a.m. East Coast time July 1, to print Competition Director Marshall Matlock (mmatlock (at) dreamscape.com). Slots for the following February are filled first come, first served. Normally, by the end of the day July 1, more than enough volunteers have sent e-mails. Please indicate in your e-mail whether you read or speak a language in addition to English.
Facilitators assist in teams helping judges do their work. They place and remove entries on tables, sort voting chips, place and remove voting cups, take winning entries to the input area, input data, proof-read data and help facilitate the process.
SND provides meals, while facilitators pay for their travel and lodging, estimated at $112 per night plus tax. Many publications cover this cost for employees because the facilitating experience yields valuable information, insights and ideas.
Facilitators must be SND members in good standing when they volunteer and at the time of the judging. They’ll be needed in Syracuse starting Friday, Feb. 3, 2012, and will be there until Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2012. Facilitators must commit to remaining at the judging for the full time.
Please provide the following information in the e-mail you send:
Publication or affiliate
Preferred e-mail address
City, State or Country
Languages that you read or speak other than English
Number of times, if any, you have assisted with past judgings
Nominating a judge
Judges for the competition are selected by the SND Competition Committee from a list of nominations sent by SND members around the world. Judges do not have to work for a newspaper or belong to SND. They must be individuals knowledgeable enough about design and visual journalism to impartially evaluate competition submissions. Interested individuals may nominate themselves.
Judges are recruited by, and responsible to, the SND Competition Coordinator, a volunteer position that changes annually. Josh Crutchmer is the 2012 Competition Coordinator. Judge nominations can be submitted through this form or emailed to SND Headquarters, email@example.com. Nominations should include the proposed judge’s:
Work address with phone number
Languages read & spoken, if known
A few sentences on why this person is qualified to be a judge (please, no resumes).
The Competition Committee seeks a diverse slate of judges from all parts of the world, representing various publication types and sizes. Judging takes place at Syracuse (N.Y.) University over two long weekends in February. Each judge is assigned to one weekend. SND pays for judges’ travel, lodging and meals.
