SND’s fifth annual competition to illustrate and design the cover for The Best of News Design™ 32nd annual book is open for submissions.
“We began the cover competition as a way to get more design concepts for the annual book cover and it’s been so successful we’ve continued this way to generate excellent covers,” said SND’s Print Competition Director Marshall Matlock.
The winning cover will appear on the book that showcases winners from the 2010 publishing year.
Cover submissions should include: The 32nd edition book’s name is “The Best of News Design™” to more accurately represent the book’s content, according to Matlock. The name change was made because the book’s covers more than newspapers. For the second year SND accepted entries from non-newspaper magazines.
With the addition of non-newspaper magazine categories the competition will include a broader spectrum of print design work, Matlock said. “We’d like the cover to represent the book’s content of excellent print designs.”
The name of the book and the organization must appear on the cover in some form. The book’s edition number has appeared on most past covers. The cover is normally printed in full color.
Specifications: Cover concepts must be 9 inches wide x 12 inches tall. An additional .25-inch is required on all sides to allow for bleed beyond the book’s trim size. Designers are asked to submit high-resolution (300 dpi at full size) jpg, tiff or PDF files. Deadline: Entries must be submitted by March 2. Judges are expected to begin their reviews around March 4; selecting the winner by the end of March 2011, Matlock said. Send entries to: Email entries to Matlock at email@example.com. Please include the word “Cover” in the e-mail’s subject line along with the designer’s last name. There is no limit to the number of cover submissions a designer may enter, but please only send one cover with each e-mail. Files may be “stuffed” if needed to save disk space. If you are sending more than one file, please number your entries in their file names and email subject lines. Be sure to include the designer’s name, publication or other affiliation, if applicable; job title, full business address, phone number and preferred e-mail address. All submissions will be quickly acknowledged. The legalese: All entries become the property of the Society for News Design.
