An SND election Q&A
I wanted to put out a personal plea to please remember to vote by Dec. 15. If you have not received voting instructions, send me a note and we’ll get you squared away.
If your membership is up for renewal, and you would like to renew in order to vote, also let me know and I’ll be happy to help get your name on the voting roll.
There is a space on the ballot for anonymous comments, which get forwarded to me. Some have contained suggestions and offers to help SND, which are always appreciated. Some contain questions about the voting process, and I thought I would take a moment to address these.
WHY AREN’T WE HAVING AN OPEN ELECTION?
We are having an open election for Secretary/Treasurer. Two months ago we began asking for nominations from the membership. In previous years, the SND Immediate Past President along with a nominating committee would name two people to the ballot without open nominations from members. This year we posted an open call on the Web site and sent emails as well. In the absence of a Immediate Past President, the Executive Committee is charged with crafting the ballot. They decided that all those accepting nomination would appear on the ballot. Six people were nominated for Secretary/Treasurer by the membership; three men, three women. Four of those members work in the U.S., the other two abroad. Of those six, two decided to be placed on the ballot. Any member can nominate any other member, or themselves, for office.
WHY ISN’T THERE COMPETITION FOR PRESIDENT AND VICE PRESIDENT?
At a special meeting in Denver in September, attended by approximately 250 members of SND, the members decided to amend the bylaws to formalize a ladder system for ascension to these two offices. It is described in Article V, Section 4.
Here’s a link to the bylaws.
There is a write-in option for all offices. This ‘ladder’ system was understood for many years but not formalized until three months ago. It was SND’s members who decided this was the best way for the Society to be run. SND belongs to you. You decide how best to operate it, and you can always help us make it better.
WHY ARE THE ELECTIONS SO LATE THIS YEAR?
After the meeting in Denver that amended the bylaws, we were required by those bylaws to give the membership six weeks to submit nominations. This is described in Article V, Section 3. In 2011 we plan to return to a September election, with results being announced at the St. Louis workshop. We’ll begin seeking nominations in June and announce candidates in late July or early August.
IF I RENEW MY MEMBERSHIP NOW CAN I VOTE?
You bet. If you renew between now and Dec. 15 I will contact you about the voting process and arrange with our election supervisors to have your name added to the rolls.
IS SND A GOOD PLACE TO SHOP FOR CHRISTMAS?
OK, I made this one up. But actually, if you’re thinking you’d like to give something nice to your mother or your friends or colleagues or anyone else you might care about, how about a 15-month calendar that shows off award-winning work from some of the world’s top illustrators? Proceeds from the calendar go to support the SND Foundation. Or the annual book from this year or previous years?
Or — try this on for size — how about a discounted registration for SND St. Louis? Try $200 if you go here to register now.
Hey folks, you know it beats a tie or a blender.
Thanks for participating in SND.
