This week, our industry mourns the passing of John Monahan, former graphics director for the Gannett News Service in the late 1980s, who later became the director of AP graphics in the early 1990s.

Charles Apple’s blog includes memories from John’s friends and former colleagues.

Wow, so sad. He introduced me to informational graphics and the Mac way back in the late 80′s. He was a trail blazer when it came to newspaper graphics and technology. Haven’t seen him in years at any of the SND functions, but then again, I’ve missed a few too.

I met John when he and Bill Cunningham worked for the Boston Globe. Bill went to the west coast to be a graphics editor and John went to AP if I remember correctly.

    He was a great guy!

I hope his family knows how many people he touched professionally and personally.

    Very sad.
