This week, our industry mourns the passing of John Monahan, former graphics director for the Gannett News Service in the late 1980s, who later became the director of AP graphics in the early 1990s.

Charles Apple’s blog includes memories from John’s friends and former colleagues.

When McSweeney’s published the San Francisco Panorama in December, many news designers eagerly thumbed through the 300+ page behemoth. Featuring contributions from Stephen King, Chris Ware, Junot Díaz and many other superstars, it was the boldest celebration and embrace of the printed broadsheet format in recent memory.

Q+A with Thomas Molén — Malofiej’s Best of Show winner

Thomas Molén, a visual journalist for Svenska Dagbladet (Stockholm), is a self-proclaimed “visual junkie” and “infographics nerd.” He’s also an award-winner. His online graphic showing voting patterns in last year’s Eurovision Song Contest won the Peter Sullivan/Best of Show award in this year’s Malofiej competition. We interview him and take a look at his amazing work.

SND information graphics commentator and world-renowned graphics guru John Grimwade, takes us behind-the-scenes at the recent Malofiej 18. Perhaps the best place to test the pulse of world infographics is in The Jumping Jester, the unofficial Malofiej headquarters. It’s an Irish-themed bar directly opposite the main conference hotel. John went there to see what everyone was buzzing about after the conference.

Malofiej 18: Svenska Dagbladet wins top honors

The jury of the 18th Malofiej competition works through the entries

The Swedish newspaper Svenska Dagbladet won the Peter Sullivan Award and Best of Show at Malofiej 18. The jury of the 18th International Infographics Awards, organized by SNDE, gave 9 gold medals, 51 silver medals and 96 bronze medals. National Geographic won the Miguel Urabayen Award to the Best Map.

Community newspaper design: Southwest Florida Gems

I’ve been to lots of beautiful places across the USA where adventurous hikers can view a rich variety of wildlife wonders. But here on the Cape Haze Peninsula, the incredibly tame, diverse, and bountiful wildlife comes to us. As these photos show, even a casual trip to the grocery store can unfold into a thrilling wildlife show. On one such trip, I became mesmerized by the Osprey family putting on a show from their nest high atop a light pole in the parking lot of the bustling Cape Haze Publix. The adults were busy delivering fresh fish to 3 hungry chicks. I love living here because I see things daily that most of the world sees only on The Discovery Channel. Photo by Brett Slattery

Our community newspaper design columnist Donna Davidson shares the six rules she’s developed for sorting through hundreds of photos each week, looking for the jewels … the ones that take her breath away. She’s currently designing a weekly community-rich long tab called the Punta Gorda Herald. It is name-and-photo centric.

Rise of the Infogeeks

In case you haven’t noticed, infographics are becoming cool. Gone are the days when we had to try camouflaging our nerdy activities under terms such as “graphic reporting” or even ”graphic journalism.”

Well executed infographics contribute to making the world a better place and my students at the Danish School of Media and Journalism are happily engaging in complex visualizations.

But before we book our trip to infotopia, there are challenges ahead.
