Atlanta Journal Constitution
Melissa is a designer at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, where she works on Sunday A1, projects and visual planning. She previously worked at the Orlando Sentinel and the Sun News in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Melissa is the SND Region 3 director and has spoken on teamwork, transformative redesigns and innovation.
Raimar J. Heber
Head of Grafphic Design
Raimar has been the graphic design department head at dpa-infografik since 1993. Prior to his Hamburg, Germany, job he was a product designer in the industrial field and advertising. He also teaches visualisation and spatial representation courses at journalism and cartooning schools in Germany. Raimar is the initiator and organizer of the informational graphics competition “dpa-infografik-Award.”
Art director/bay magazine and senior designer
St. Petersburg Times
Suzette has been a designer at the St. Petersburg Times since 2006. She is also creative director of bay magazine, a niche publication of the Times. She previously was art director of the Hartford Courant in Connecticut, and presentation editor at the Bremerton Sun in Washington. Both papers were awarded “Best-Designed Newspapers” during her tenures.

Wall Street Journal
Sarah joined The Wall Street Journal in September 2009 from Fortune, where she was the informational graphics director in print and online. Slobin spent 15 years at The New York Times graphics desk, three running the business graphics desk. Her work has received awards from SND, AIGA, Malofiej and has been part of four Pulitzer prize series. She graduated from NYU with a Bachelor of Fine Arts.
Mark is a Web designer and developer at The Oregonian in Portland, Ore., where he has worked since 1994. Before moving to the Web, he was a print designer in the news and business departments, including several years as the newspaper’s lead A1 designer. His work has been recognized by SND and the Online News Association.
Features Design Editor
Geneviève is the features design editor at the National Post, Canada. She oversees the Arts & Life section which includes the many award winning Avenue page, as well as various weekend sections and the Post Homes magazine. She has won numerous awards from SND and was nominated twice for a national newspaper award, winning in 2006. Originally from the world of magazine design, she entered the newspaper design profession in 2006.
Features Design Director
Diane is features design director for the Pittsburgh (Pa.) Post-Gazette. A graphic design professional for over 30 years, her work has received multiple SND and Print design awards. She oversees concept and layout of daily and Sunday features section fronts and special publications at the Post-Gazette.
Chuck is responsible for the presentation of the features print portfolio at his hometown Chicago Tribune. He learned how to swing at the San Jose Mercury News, where he was part of a World’s Best-Designed Newspaper crew, and at The Times of Northwest Indiana.
Deputy Design Director / News
The Plain Dealer
Emmet is the deputy design director for news at the Plain Dealer in sunny Cleveland, Ohio where he has worked since 2004. A 2003 graduate of Ball State University, he has also worked or interned at The Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk, Virginia, The Indianapolis Star, the Detroit Free Press and the San Jose Mercury News.

St. Louis Post-Dispatch
Tippi has worked as a designer, art director and photo editor for numerous publications, including Copley Chicago Newspapers, Smithsonian Magazine, the Minneapolis Star Tribune, and currently as Features Design Director at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Her work has been recognized by Pictures of the Year, World Press Photo and SND.

Global picture desk manager
Andreas manages Getty Images’ editorial division’s Global Picture Desk in New York, having lead their editorial photo operations in Germany prior. Starting out as photographer at the Jacksonville (Ill.) Journal-Courier in the early 90s when it was one of Illinois’ premier visual newspapers, Gebhard later joined the news pictures service of the domestic German news agency ddp, starting as photographer and ultimately advancing to managing editor before moving on to Getty Images.
Arizona Daily Star
James is a photojournalist for the Arizona Daily Star in Tucson, Ariz. He is a two-time Arizona Photographer of the Year and the current Photojournalist of the Year for smaller markets in the National Press Photographer’s Association Best of Photojournalism. In 2009, Gregg was recognized with two Emmy awards by the Rocky Mountain Southwest chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for his multimedia efforts.

Howard University, Department of Journalism
Barbara is professor of journalism and director of the Graduate Program in Mass Communication and Media Studies at Howard University, where she has taught since 1984. A leader in journalism education, she is past president of the international Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication and former chair of the Education Committee for SND.
The Fayetteville (NC) Observer
Bill, a designer The Fayetteville Observer in North Carolina, has been a designer for 12 years. He has worked as a designer in features, news and sports for four years at The State in Columbia, S.C. Previous design jobs includes time spent at The Sun News in Myrtle Beach, S.C.; The Potomac News in Woodbridge, Va.; and The Evening Tribune in Hornell, N.Y.
Salt Lake Tribune
Colin is currently the presentation editor at The Salt Lake Tribune. Before that, he worked at the Kitsap Sun in Bremerton, Wash., the Daily Herald in Provo, Utah, the Courier News in Elgin, Ill., and the Press-Telegram in Long Beach, Calif. And before all that, he graduated from the University of Southern California in 2000 with a bachelor’s degree in urban planning. He’s been an active member of SND’s Competition Committee and designed the Call for Entries the past two years.

The Sydney Morning Herald
Matt is the managing editor for presentation for The Sydney Morning Herald and The Sun-Herald in Sydney, Australia. He has held similar positions in Australia and in New Zealand and has also worked for national newspapers in the United Kingdom. He is SND’s Oceania coordinator.
Oscar Santiago Mendez
Oscar is the design director of El Universal newspaper in Mexico City. He has worked for Editorial Televisa, La Opinión newspaper from L.A., Reader’s Digest Mexico and Reforma Newspaper. He has managed and collaborated on many redesign projects. In his 14-year News Design career his work has been recognized with several SND and NAHP awards.

San Francisco Chronicle
Frank is assistant managing editor, presentation at the San Francisco Chronicle. Since joining the paper in 1997, he has been recognized by SND and other organizations for his outstanding work as a designer. He was part of the design team that launched the paper’s redesign in 2009.

The Times of Northwest Indiana
Matt is The Times of Northwest Indiana presentation director and a former SND regional director, workshop speaker and competition coordinator. His work has been honored by SND, SPJ and SNA, and he has led redesigns at many publications. He is also a mixed martial arts journalist. He lives in the shadow of Chicago with his wife Kerry and dog Gracie.
2009-2010 John S. Knight Journalism Fellow
Geoff is a 10-year veteran of online news, McGhee has created interactive graphics and multimedia at NYTimes.com, ABCNews.com and Le Monde Interactif in France. He is currently studying data visualization as a John S. Knight Fellow in journalism at Stanford University. He is a graduate of the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.

Director of Digital Product Development
Kris joined the National Geographic Society in Washington, D.C. in 2005. She is charged with initiating, conceptualizing, designing, developing and launching multi-platform products, in collaboration with divisions and outside partners. Before her present job, she held creative posts at four California newspapers. She was elected SND’s president for 2010.
There’s one less team of judges this year compared to recent years (because there are fewer entries than years past), so Mike Rice said he plans to reassign the judges to different teams later in the weekend. These specialists will focus on information graphics:
